Why Are Yearly Examinations Necessary?
Dogs, cats and rabbits need to check in with our doctors yearly for a number of reasons. It is important for them to see our veterinarians when they are well so they can continue to stay healthy. If your pet is older, it should be seen bi-annually so that any geriatric issues discovered through a thorough examination can be addressed in a timely manner to prolong a good quality of life for your pet.
Generally, pets receive some vaccinations annually, but today, many are given every three years. Even if your pet does not need a booster immunization it is important that it be thoroughly examined once a year to make sure everything is OK on the inside, as well as the outside. Owners would naturally know their pet’s daily routines much better than our professionals would, so their assessment of a pet being “under the weather” is something we take seriously and use these observations as a jumping off point to start a comprehensive “nose to toes” physical examination. Often, further evaluation with blood tests, X-ray films, urinalysis, electrocardiograms and a myriad of other diagnostic tests can be performed as required to give us a more complete picture of the pet’s problem and to lead us to the proper treatments.
The best medicine is preventative care for your pets, just as it is for humans. Please be proactive when caring for your furry, four-legged family members.
